Soft Shell Eggs: Why Your Hen Lays Rubbery Eggs and How to Fix It
A soft shell egg is an egg laid with a thin membrane and little or no hard shell. In backyard flocks the cause is almost always available calcium, not disease. Pullets just starting to lay, hens in a heat wave, and flocks eating a diluted ration (lots of scratch, treats, or table scraps) are the three groups that produce most soft shell eggs. Offer free-choice oyster shell in a separate dish, keep layer feed at roughly 90 percent of intake, and most flocks firm up within one to two weeks.
Most likely causes
- New layer
The first two to six weeks of lay often include soft or odd shells while the shell gland calibrates.
- Calcium shortfall
Treats and scratch dilute layer feed. Free-choice oyster shell lets each hen top herself up.
- Heat stress
Panting changes blood chemistry and reduces shell deposition. Shade, cool water, and electrolytes help.
- Age
Hens past three or four years lay larger eggs with the same shell material spread thinner.
- Disturbance at night
A hen startled off the roost can expel an egg before the shell finishes.
What to do this week
- Put out free-choice oyster shell in its own container, never mixed into feed.
- Cut treats and scratch to under 10 percent of daily intake for two weeks.
- Give cool water and shade during hot spells, and add electrolytes above 90F.
- Check for night disturbances such as predators or a light on a timer.
- Log which hen is affected so you can tell a flock problem from a single bird.
When it is worth a closer look
- Soft shells continue past three weeks with oyster shell available.
- Multiple hens drop production sharply at the same time.
- You also see pale combs, watery droppings, gasping, or swelling.

Common questions
Can chickens eat soft shell eggs?
Remove them promptly. Hens that break and eat soft eggs can learn egg eating, which is hard to unlearn.
How long does it take to fix soft shell eggs?
With oyster shell available, most flocks return to firm shells in one to two weeks. New layers may need a little longer.
Is a soft shell egg safe to eat?
If it is clean, intact, and fresh it is generally fine cooked, but the membrane picks up bacteria easily, so many keepers discard them.
