Nest Box Calculator: the complete guide
Hens are stubborn about where they lay. Too few boxes means floor eggs and broken shells, too many means wasted coop space that hens turn into extra roosting spots. This calculator gives the box count and interior dimensions for your flock.
How the nest box calculator works
- The standard is one nest box per four laying hens, rounded up, with a minimum of two boxes so a broody hen never blocks the only option.
- Box size scales with breed: about 12 inch cube for standard breeds, 10 inch for bantams, 14 inch for heavy breeds.
- Only laying hens count. Roosters and young pullets are excluded.
How to use it
- Enter the number of laying hens, not the whole flock.
- Pick breed size to get the right interior dimensions.
- Build to the box count shown, then mount them below roost height.
Step by step examples
Eight laying hens, standard breeds
Eight divided by four is two boxes, each about 12 x 12 x 12 inches. Most of the flock will still fight over one favorite box.
Fifteen hens, mixed heavy breeds
Fifteen divided by four rounds up to four boxes at 14 inch cubes.

Common mistakes
- Mounting boxes above the roost bars, which teaches hens to sleep and poop in them.
- Leaving boxes bright and exposed. Hens want dim and private.
- Skipping a lip at the front, so bedding and eggs get kicked out.
- Letting eggs sit all day, which encourages egg eating.
