Chicken mites: how to identify and get rid of them
Three main mites attack backyard chickens: red mites (live in the coop), northern fowl mites (live on the bird), and scaly leg mites (under leg scales). Treatment differs for each.

Open AI Chicken DoctorMost likely causes
1. Red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae)
Live in coop cracks by day, feed on birds at night. Cause anemia, pale combs, and night-time restlessness.
2. Northern fowl mites
Live on the bird 24/7, especially around the vent. Look like moving black pepper.
3. Scaly leg mites
Burrow under leg scales. See dedicated guide.
What to check first
- At night with a flashlight, check perch undersides for moving red specks.
- Part feathers near the vent, see crawling pests or dark egg clusters at feather bases?
- Pale combs and weight loss in the flock?
- Hens refusing to roost or seeming restless at night?
Home care that works
- Treat birds with permethrin dust (Manna Pro Poultry Protector) under wings and around vent. Repeat in 7-10 days.
- Strip and burn old bedding; scrub coop with hot soapy water.
- Treat coop cracks, perches, and nest boxes with permethrin spray.
- Add a generous diatomaceous earth dust bath for the flock.
- Repeat coop treatment after 7 days to catch hatching mites.
Call a vet if
- Severe anemia (very pale comb, weakness, collapse).
- Mite infestation that returns after 2 full treatment cycles.
Frequently asked questions
Does diatomaceous earth kill chicken mites?
Food-grade DE helps in dust baths and dry coop crevices, but it's not strong enough to clear an active infestation alone. Use permethrin for the kill, DE for prevention.
How fast do mites multiply?
Red mites complete a life cycle in 7-10 days in warm weather, that's why a single treatment never works.
