Roost Length Calculator: the complete guide
Chickens sleep shoulder to shoulder on a bar, and the bird at the end of a short roost gets pushed off every night. This calculator gives inches per bird and total linear feet so everyone has a spot.
How the roost length calculator works
- Standard breeds need 8 to 10 inches of bar each. Bantams need about 6, heavy breeds around 12.
- Total length is inches per bird times bird count, then converted to feet.
- Long runs can be split across multiple parallel bars, staggered in height, with 12 to 18 inches of clearance between them.
How to use it
- Enter the number of birds that sleep in the coop.
- Pick breed size.
- Split the total feet into bar lengths that fit the coop, keeping bars at the same height where possible so birds do not fight for the top spot.

Common mistakes
- Using a round dowel or a narrow edge. Chickens cannot cover their toes in winter, which invites frostbite.
- Placing the roost above the nest boxes.
- Mounting heavy breeds too high, which causes bumblefoot from hard landings.
- Running the roost right up against a cold outer wall or under a draft.
